The opinions divide on which one is the better concept. It's not needed to play part 1 to enjoy part 2 since like all Spiderweb games while the series tells a overaching story each installment is stand alone so you usually don't miss much by skipping one or more installments like the only thing you miss out on going from Avernum 2 and not playing the first one is seeing the reason why the battle between Avernum and the Empire happens since it was tied to the end of the first game.
Zaxx Avernum 1 was remade as Avernum: Escape from the PitĪs for your last question. The setting's story is a continuum throughout the series but otherwise every game tells its own story, only referred to in the backstories of the other games. I believe you can enjoy this one well without having played the first one. Myself, I've played through the first Avernum (the original one) as well as the remake Avernum: Escape from the Pit, but I've only played around half-way through (the original) Avernum 2.
Also, 2nd game introduces two playable races not available in the first one. I think there are a couple of different opinions on which one is better. If I'm understanding correctly your confusion: Avernum: Escape from the Pit, that is on Steam, is already a remake of the original Avernum, which in itself was a remake of Exile: Escape from the Pit.
