It's not needed to play part 1 to enjoy part 2 since like all Spiderweb games while the series tells a overaching story each installment is stand alone so you usually don't miss much by skipping one or more installments like the only thing you miss out on going from Avernum 2 and not playing the first one is seeing the reason why the battle between Avernum and the Empire happens since it was tied to the end of the first game.
